  • 29% of cities in the developing world have areas considered as inaccessible or dangerous to the police. In Latin America and the Caribbean, this figure is 48 %.

  • Suluin Maa (Earth’s Grandchildren) is a group of youth from Venezuela, who proactively responded to the high rate of deaths due to diarrhea. Suluin Maa worked with health professionals and developed a puppet-show to educate on healthy preventative measures. After making over 50 presentations in one year, health officials from the municipality stated that mortality rates were reduced by half that year.
  • Buses and minibuses are the most common mode of transport in the world’s cities. Cars are the second most common mode used, while walking is the third most common mode. Travel time in Asian cities appears to be the longest with an average of 42 minutes per trip.
  • An estimated 10,000-20,000 women and children in prostitution in Phnom Penh, a city of 1 million; up to 35% of them have been smuggled into Cambodia from China or Vietnam.
